In Memory

Michael McElwain (Lenhart)

Michael McElwain (Lenhart)

Michael Anne Lenhart, Sandusky, passed away peacefully at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a prolonged illness.

She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from Shaker Heights High School, Marjorie Webster Junior College, and attended Hillsdale College.

She has lived for the past 44 years in Sandusky, and was a great supporter of the city, its past, present, and its future. She assumed many leadership roles in her adopted community, including the Boeckling Board, Sandusky Cultural Center, Old House Guild, Follet House, and especially Sandusky City Schools. She volunteered at Ontario School and served on the School Board as a member and president. Michael participated in Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Group, Art Study Group, numerous bridge goups and several leadership roles at Grace Episcopal Church, including several terms on the Vestry and serving as Senior Warden.

Her greatest joy in her life was her family, especially multiple summer family vacations at Martha's Vineyard and the Outer Banks. She nurtured close relationships with family and many friends. She had a signature style, warm smile, and great sense of humor. She was fearless, certain in her beliefs, and would not hesitate to battle to defend them.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald Lenhart, daughters Christy (Brett) Laggan, Sarah (Mike) Franklin, and son John (Jessica) Lenhart; grandchildren Molly, Tyler, and Michael Franklin, Riley and Sam Laggan, and Penelope and Simon Lenhart.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Harriette (Donovan) McElwain and granddaughter Elizabeth Redd Lenhart.

A memorial service is planned for the summer. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sandusky Education Foundation for the Pool Project, 135 E. Washington Row, Sandusky, OH 44870, or to one's favorite charity.

I'm saddened to read this. I'm not at all surprised to read about how involved she was in her community, that always seemed to me to be Mike's way of living her life, fully immersed. I enjoyed her friendship in high school and looked forward to seeing her at reunions. My sympathies to you Don and your family.
